Air supplyAir systems on a light-rescue truck should be given careful consideration due to the substantial weight of most of the components. Air system storage choices should be matched to the output of the stationary air compressor. DOT cylinders with 4,500 or 6,000psi ratings weigh 144 pounds or 188 pounds each while ASME cylinders with 5,000 or 6,000psi ratings that weigh 400 pounds each.The DOT cylinders need easy access for removal, as they will need to be removed every five years for hydro testing. The ASME cylinders never need hydro testing, so they can be located in areas where future access may not be of a concern. However, they cost more than DOT cylinders.

THE MOTORMost hermetic compressors use induction motors cooled by either liquid or suction-gas refrigerant. Induction motors have copper windings that, when alternating current is run through them, create the magnetic fields that cause the motor to turn. These copper windings are bulky, adding size and weight to the compressor.Two-pole, 60-Hz induction motors operate at approximately 3,600 rpm. A higher number of revolutions per minute can be obtained by increasing the frequency. Compressors that require higher shaft speeds tend to use gears. While gears are a proven technology, they create noise and vibration, consume power, and require lubrication.The magnet-bearing compressor features a synchronous permanent-magnet brushless DC motor with a completely integrated variable-frequency drive (VFD). The stator windings found on conventional induction motors are replaced with a permanent-magnet rotor. Alternating current from the inverter energizes the armature windings. The stator (excitation) and rotor (armature) change places. No commutator brushes are required. The motor and key electronic components are internally refrigerant-cooled, so no special commercial cooling is required for the VFD or the motor.

Welding-site conditions and welding-wire diameter govern efficiency and size of power supply required for a job. Select a 100-A unit that runs from single-phase 115-V input for low-duty-cycle welding of sheet to l/s in. thick, feeding wire to 0.030-in. diameter. Medium-duty power supplies, 150-200 A, normally take single-phase 220-V input to weld steel to 3/16, lawn in. and 0.035-in. wire at low-duty cycles. For high-duty cycles, as in mechanized welding, select a 250-A machine, single or three-phase input at various voltages-these weld material to 1/2 in. thick with wire as large as 0.045-in. diameter. Taking three-phase input only and wire up to 1/6-in. diameter, 400-A units serve for mechanized continuous-welding applications. For pulsed GMAW, shops use inverter and transistor power sources, constant-current or constant-voltage, that offer independent setting of pulse parameters. They employ synergic controls preprogrammed for a range of wire-feed speeds-the operator sets only one dial, for average current.
